Why commercial writing?
If you ask most commercial writers how they chose their profession, you’ll hear a lot about stints as a marketing intern, or how to make ends meet while developing a blockbuster novel. That’s not to take anything away from their talent as a professional writer, mind you. But my story is a little bit different. I’m happy to say that I came to commercial writing in a completely selfish way. Let me explain…
One of the overriding passions in my life is learning. Try as I might, I just can’t stop doing it. Jaguar behavior; advances in the field of prosthetics; dairy farm management; how fungi have affected immigration patterns throughout history; cellular technology; the mechanics behind producing better hypodermic needles; new high-rise construction techniques; and the travel habits and preferences of the elderly. All have been on my plate within the space of a few months.
And I’m fascinated by all of it.
For me, this love of learning translates into a natural fit for commercial writing. What better way to spend a day than learning about a client’s latest product, or interviewing an employee about the success of a recent project? All of these are fabulous opportunities to learn new things, and then help others enjoy them, too. My passion means that I ask more questions and I find more connections. I want to understand. Clients see the fruits of that understanding in my work – in a greater level of intimacy and knowledge on internal pieces, and in greater customer response to their external marketing efforts.
